Do you ever walk outside in Charlotte and feel like you are breathing in a warm, wet blanket? That is the famous North Carolina humidity. We love our green trees and beautiful lakes, but that moisture in the air is doing more than just making your hair frizzy. It is actually attacking your roof every single day.
At Best Roofing Now, we see the results of this humidity all the time. We are a veteran-owned company. That means we believe in doing things the right way. We don't just want to slap some shingles on your house and leave. We want to make sure your roof lasts a lifetime.
Many homeowners in the Charlotte and Lake Norman area are making simple mistakes. These mistakes let the humidity win. Over time, that wet air can rot your wood, grow gross mold, and make your shingles fall apart way too soon.
But don't worry! We are going to walk through the 7 biggest mistakes people make. We will also show you exactly how to protect your home. Let's dive into the "silent killer" of North Carolina roofs.
Imagine you are in a car on a hot summer day. You turn off the engine and close all the windows. It gets hot fast, right? But it also gets stuffy. If you have a coffee in the cup holder, the steam has nowhere to go.
Your attic is the same way. Many people think their attic should be sealed up tight to keep the house warm in the winter. But that is a big mistake. Your attic needs to breathe.
In North Carolina, the sun beats down on your roof. This makes your attic very hot. If you don't have good airflow, that heat gets trapped. But it is not just heat. It is the humidity.
When you cook, shower, or even just breathe, you create moisture. This moisture travels up into your attic. If the attic is a "closed box," that moisture stays there. It turns into tiny water drops on your wood beams. This is called condensation.
Over time, this water makes the wood soft and weak. This is how rot starts. To fix this, you need a balanced ventilation system. You need air coming in at the bottom (the soffits) and going out at the top (the ridge).
As Ralph Finizio from GAF once said, "Moisture is the biggest enemy of a home." He points out that a normal family can make up to five gallons of moisture every day! If your attic can't breathe, that water is stuck inside your house.
Have you looked at your roof and seen long, dark streaks? Most people think it is just dirt or soot from the city. They think, "Oh, my roof is just getting old and dirty."
This is a huge mistake. Those streaks are not dirt. They are actually a living organism. It is a type of algae called Gloeocapsa magma.
This algae loves the Charlotte humidity. It eats the limestone inside your shingles. Yes, your shingles have rocks in them to make them heavy and strong. The algae thinks those rocks are a delicious snack.

When the algae eats your shingles, it makes them thin. It also holds onto water. Remember, humidity is the enemy. If you have algae on your roof, it acts like a wet sponge. Your roof never gets a chance to dry out.
If you leave those streaks alone, your roof will start to fall apart. The shingles will get brittle. They might even start to curl up at the edges.
We recommend catching this early. Don't wait until half your roof is black. We can help you identify if you have an algae problem before it turns into a rot problem.
Insulation is great. It keeps your energy bills low. It keeps your house cozy in the winter. But there is such a thing as too much insulation: or rather, insulation in the wrong place.
One of the biggest mistakes we see in neighborhoods around Huntersville and Cornelius is blocked soffit vents.
Soffit vents are the little holes under the edge of your roof. They are the "mouth" of your roof. They suck in cool air. If you push your attic insulation all the way to the edge, you might cover those vents.
This chokes your roof. It stops the fresh air from coming in. When that happens, the humid air stays stuck at the top of your attic. It’s like trying to breathe through a straw that is half-clogged.
When we do a free inspection at Best Roofing Now, we always look at your vents. We make sure your insulation is doing its job without stopping your roof from breathing. We often install "baffles." These are plastic channels that keep the insulation away from the vents. It is a simple fix that can save you thousands of dollars in roof repairs later.
This mistake is very common, and it sounds a bit technical, but it's simple once you see it.
There are different ways to let air out of your roof. Some houses have a "ridge vent" (a long gap at the very top). Others have "box vents" or "power fans" (fans that spin).
A big mistake is having both at the same time. You might think, "More vents are better!" But that is not true.
If you have a ridge vent and a power fan, they can fight each other. The fan might suck air in through the ridge vent instead of pulling it from the bottom of the roof. This creates a "short circuit."
The humid air at the bottom of your attic stays stuck. Only the air at the very top moves around. This leaves the rest of your attic damp and hot.
You want one clear path for air. It should go from the bottom to the top. If you have mixed vents, you are likely trapping humidity in the corners of your attic. This is where mold loves to grow.
You might be wondering, "What do gutters have to do with humidity?"
In North Carolina, we get a lot of rain. If your gutters are full of leaves and pine needles, the water has nowhere to go. It sits there.
When the sun comes out after a storm, that sitting water starts to evaporate. It turns into heavy, wet steam right next to your roof's edge. This creates a "micro-climate" of super-high humidity right under your shingles.
This extra moisture can soak into the "fascia" boards (the wood behind the gutters). It can also work its way under your first row of shingles.
Clean gutters are your first line of defense against humidity damage. If the water can flow away from your house, your roof can dry out much faster. We always tell our neighbors in Matthews and Mint Hill to keep those gutters clear, especially during the humid summer months.

When people see the black streaks we talked about in Mistake 2, they often want to fix it themselves. They grab a pressure washer and climb up on a ladder.
Stop! This is a terrible idea.
Pressure washers are way too strong for shingles. Shingles are covered in tiny sand-like granules. These granules protect the asphalt from the sun and the humidity.
If you hit them with high-pressure water, you will blast those granules right off. You might get rid of the algae, but you are also getting rid of your roof’s armor.
Without those granules, the hot North Carolina sun will melt the asphalt. The humidity will soak into the shingles faster. You will turn a 20-year roof into a 5-year roof in one afternoon.
If you have algae or mold, you need a "soft wash." This uses special soaps to kill the living stuff without hurting the shingles. It is like using a gentle sponge instead of a sandpaper blast.
When it is time for a new roof, it is tempting to pick the cheapest option. All shingles look the same from the ground, right?
Not in a humid place like Charlotte.
Standard shingles don't have much protection against algae and humidity. If you buy the "budget" shingles, you might see those black streaks return in just a few years.
At Best Roofing Now, we use high-quality materials from leaders like GAF and CertainTeed. For example, GAF has a special shingle called "StainGuard Plus." It has tiny copper bits inside. Copper is like poison to algae. When it rains, the copper releases a little bit of protection that keeps the algae away.
Paying a little more now for an algae-resistant shingle saves you so much money later. You won't have to pay for cleanings, and your roof will stay looking brand new for a long time.
Now you know the mistakes. But how do you actually win the war against humidity?
It starts with a professional eye. Most homeowners don't want to crawl around in a hot attic or climb up on a steep roof. That is what we are here for.
Our "consultation-based" approach means we sit down with you. We don't use high-pressure sales. We just show you what is happening with your home.
Here is our 3-step protection plan:
As a veteran-owned business, we take pride in our craftsmanship. We offer lifetime warranties because we know our work stands up to the NC humidity. We treat your home like it is our own.

Humidity is a part of life in North Carolina. We can't change the weather, but we can change how your roof handles it.
By avoiding these 7 mistakes, you can add years: even decades: to the life of your roof. You will have a cooler house, lower energy bills, and a roof that looks beautiful for years.
