If you live in Charlotte or around Lake Norman, you know our weather has a mind of its own. One minute it’s a beautiful 75-degree afternoon, and the next, a massive thunderstorm is rolling in with hail the size of golf balls. As a homeowner, your roof is the first line of defense against these sudden shifts.
When it’s time for a roof replacement, you’re usually faced with a big choice: do you go with the standard asphalt shingles everyone else has, or do you upgrade to Class 4 impact-resistant shingles?
At Best Roofing Now, we get asked this all the time. As a veteran-owned business, we believe in being straight with you. We aren’t here to sell you the most expensive thing on the menu. We’re here to help you build a roof that actually protects your family and your bank account.
In this deep dive, we’re going to break down the real differences between Class 4 and standard shingles. We’ll look at the testing, the costs, the insurance perks in North Carolina, and whether that extra investment is actually worth it for your specific home.
You might hear the term "impact-resistant" or "IR shingles" thrown around. But "Class 4" is a very specific technical rating. It’s not just a marketing buzzword; it’s a grade given based on a standardized test called the UL 2218.
Imagine a laboratory where scientists are trying to destroy roofing materials. To get a Class 4 rating, a shingle has to survive a brutal test. They take a 2-inch steel ball and drop it from a height of 20 feet directly onto the shingle. They do this twice in the same spot.
For a shingle to pass and earn the Class 4 label, it cannot show any signs of "fracture" on the back of the shingle. A standard asphalt shingle would likely split or crack under that kind of pressure. A Class 4 shingle is designed to flex and absorb that energy without breaking.
Standard shingles are made of a fiberglass mat coated in asphalt and covered with granules. They are great for everyday rain, but they can be brittle.
Class 4 shingles are often made with "SBS modified asphalt." Think of SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) like a rubberizing agent. It makes the asphalt more like a high-performance tire than a piece of hard plastic. This "rubberized" asphalt allows the shingle to bounce back after a hailstone hits it.

Charlotte isn't technically in "Hail Alley," but we get our fair share of rough weather. Between the humidity that can make shingles brittle over time and the intense spring storms, our roofs take a beating.
When hail hits a standard roof, it might not look like much from the ground. But those hits knock off the protective granules. Once the granules are gone, the sun’s UV rays eat away at the asphalt underneath. Within a year or two, you have leaks.
Class 4 shingles hold onto their granules much better. This means your roof stays "younger" for longer, even after a storm rolls through Myers Park or Huntersville.
Most Class 4 shingles also come with higher wind ratings. Many are rated for winds up to 130 mph. Given that we occasionally feel the tail end of hurricanes here in the Piedmont, that extra wind resistance provides a lot of peace of mind.
A standard architectural shingle roof might last you 20 to 25 years if you’re lucky. A Class 4 roof system is often engineered to last 30 years or more. Because the material doesn't crack as easily during temperature swings, which we have a lot of in North Carolina, it stays waterproof for a much longer period.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the price. Class 4 shingles are more expensive than standard shingles. Generally, you can expect the material cost to be about 20% to 40% higher.
However, looking at the sticker price alone is a mistake. You have to look at the "Total Cost of Ownership."
This is where it gets interesting for Charlotte residents. Because Class 4 roofs are so much less likely to result in a massive insurance claim after a storm, many insurance companies offer a discount on your premiums.
In North Carolina, we’ve seen homeowners get 10% to 28% off their annual homeowners insurance premiums just for having a UL 2218 Class 4 roof.
Let’s do the math:
In many cases, the insurance savings alone will pay for the cost of the upgrade within 5 to 8 years. Everything after that is pure profit staying in your pocket.
The most expensive part of a roof isn't the installation, it's the insurance deductible you have to pay when it gets damaged. If a standard roof gets trashed by a 1-inch hail storm, you’re out $1,000, $2,500, or even $5,000 for your deductible. A Class 4 roof might walk away from that same storm with zero damage.
Saving yourself from just one insurance claim over 20 years makes the Class 4 shingle the clear financial winner.
As a certified contractor with GAF and CertainTeed, we have access to the best Class 4 products on the market. Here are the two we recommend most for our local climate:
GAF is the biggest name in roofing, and their ArmorShield II line is a beast. It features the classic look of their Timberline shingles but with an SBS-modified asphalt formula. It’s tough, it looks great, and it comes with an excellent warranty.
CertainTeed is known for making the "heavyweights" of the roofing world. Their NorthGate ClimateFlex shingles are some of the most flexible shingles we’ve ever worked with. Even on a cold morning in Lake Norman, these shingles stay pliable, which prevents cracking during installation and throughout the roof's life.

At Best Roofing Now, we operate with a "Mission First" mindset. In the military, you don't use gear that's going to fail you when things get tough. We bring that same philosophy to your home.
We offer free inspections and consultations because we want you to have all the facts. If we see that your house is in a neighborhood that gets hit by wind frequently, we’ll tell you. If we think a standard shingle is perfectly fine for your situation, we’ll tell you that too.
We don't use high-pressure sales. We use data. We’ll show you the local weather patterns and the insurance math so you can make a choice that fits your family's budget and goals.
Most homeowners only want to replace their roof once while they live in a house. Upgrading to a Class 4 system is the closest you can get to a "one-and-done" solution with asphalt. It’s an investment in the future value of your home. If you ever decide to sell, a Class 4 roof is a massive selling point for savvy buyers who want lower insurance rates and less maintenance.
You could buy the most expensive Class 4 shingle in the world, but if it’s installed poorly, it’s going to leak.
At Best Roofing Now, we don't just "nail down shingles." We install a complete roofing system. This includes:
We take pride in our expert craftsmanship, and it shows in every job we finish.

Still not sure? Ask yourself these questions:
"The use of SBS-modified asphalt in Class 4 shingles is one of the biggest advancements in residential roofing. It bridges the gap between traditional asphalt and much more expensive materials like metal or slate." , Industry Material Specialist
From the street, no. They look like high-end architectural shingles. They come in all the same beautiful colors. The difference is in the chemistry of the asphalt and the thickness of the mat.
Some Class 4 shingles are also "Cool Roof" rated. They have special granules that reflect sunlight away from your house. This can keep your attic cooler and save you money on air conditioning during those brutal Charlotte Augusts.
Even without the discount, many people choose Class 4 for the peace of mind and the increased resale value of the home. Plus, you’re still saving money by avoiding small repairs over the next 25 years.
Standard asphalt shingles are a solid choice for many, but if you want the best protection for your Charlotte home, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are the gold standard. They offer better durability, potential insurance savings, and a longer life for your most important investment.
At Best Roofing Now, we’re proud to be a local, veteran-owned business serving the Charlotte and Lake Norman communities. We treat every roof as if it were our own.
