If you live in Charlotte or near Lake Norman, you know that summer feeling. You step outside in July, and the air feels like a warm, wet blanket. We call it "The Humidity." It makes your hair frizz and your glasses fog up. But have you ever thought about what that thick, wet air is doing to your roof?
Most homeowners think a roof just sits there. They think it only has a job when it rains. But in North Carolina, your roof is working 24 hours a day to fight off moisture. If you make a few simple mistakes, that moisture will win. And when moisture wins, your roof dies young.
I have seen it hundreds of times. A roof that should have lasted 30 years is falling apart at year 15. Why? Because of humidity mistakes. As a veteran-owned business, we believe in being honest. We don't want to just sell you a new roof. We want to help you keep the one you have for as long as possible.
Let's look at the biggest mistakes Charlotte homeowners make with humidity and how you can fix them.
This is the most common mistake I see from Dilworth to Ballantyne. Many homes have great vents at the very top of the roof. These are called ridge vents. They let hot air out. But here is the problem: for air to go out, new air has to come in.
Think of your attic like a straw. If you plug one end of the straw, you can't blow air through it. Your attic needs "intake" vents. These are usually located under your eaves. They are called soffit vents.
When you have a ridge vent but no soffit vents (or blocked ones), your attic becomes a greenhouse. The hot, wet Charlotte air gets trapped. It sits against the bottom of your roof deck. This moisture soaks into the wood. Over time, the wood gets soft. It might even start to rot.
How to fix it:
We follow the 1:150 rule. This is part of the North Carolina building code. For every 150 square feet of attic space, you need one square foot of vent area. And it needs to be balanced. Half of the vents should be low (intake), and half should be high (exhaust).
When we do a free inspection, the first thing I do is crawl into the attic. I look for those soffit vents. If they are covered in insulation, your roof is suffocating.

Have you seen those ugly black streaks on your roof? Or maybe your neighbor's roof? Many people think it is just soot or dirt from the road. But it isn't.
In Charlotte, those streaks are usually a type of algae called Gloeocapsa magma. This algae loves our humidity. It thrives in warm, damp spots. And here is the kicker: it actually eats your roof.
Modern asphalt shingles have limestone in them. The algae eats that limestone for breakfast. As it grows, it holds onto even more moisture. This keeps your shingles damp for longer. It's like leaving a wet towel on your wooden floor. Eventually, things are going to rot.
The Expert Quote:
"Algae growth can cause shingles to retain heat, which increases cooling costs and can lead to premature aging of the asphalt." , GAF Materials Corporation
If you leave the algae there, your roof gets hotter. Your AC has to work harder. Your power bill goes up. It is a cycle that costs you money every single month.

This is a "builder-grade" mistake we see all the time in newer Charlotte developments. You turn on your bathroom fan to get the steam out after a shower. That fan sucks the wet air up. But where does it go?
In many homes, the fan just blows that wet air right into the attic. It doesn't go outside. It just dumps gallons of water vapor into your roof space.
In the winter, that warm, wet air hits the cold bottom of your roof. It turns into water droplets. This is called condensation. It's like your roof is "sweating" from the inside out. This leads to mold. It leads to ruined insulation. And eventually, it leads to a very expensive roof repair.
How to fix it:
Your bathroom and kitchen fans must vent all the way to the outside. They should go through the roof or out a side wall. If you aren't sure where yours goes, give us a call. We can check it in five minutes.
I get it. You see those black streaks we talked about, and you want them gone. You grab your pressure washer or hire a guy with a truck. You think, "I'll just blast that algae off."
Please, don't do that.
Your asphalt shingles are covered in tiny rocks called granules. These granules protect the shingle from the sun. They are like sunscreen for your house. A pressure washer is way too strong. It will blast those granules right off.
Once the granules are gone, the sun "bakes" the asphalt. The shingle will get brittle and crack. You might get the algae off, but you just took ten years off the life of your roof.
How to fix it:
Use a "soft wash" method. This uses special soaps to kill the algae without high pressure. It is safe for the shingles and safe for your warranty.
Gutters aren't just for rain. They are part of your roof's "breathing" system. In Charlotte, we have a lot of trees. Oaks, maples, and pines drop a lot of stuff. When your gutters get full, they trap water.
That water doesn't just sit in the gutter. It wicks up into the edge of your roof. This is called the "eave." Because it is so humid in North Carolina, that damp wood never really dries out. It stays soggy. Soggy wood attracts bugs like termites and carpenter ants.

The Professional Advice:
"Properly functioning gutters and downspouts are essential to prevent water from backing up under the roof covering." : National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA)
We recommend cleaning your gutters at least twice a year. If you live in a wooded area like Lake Norman, you might need it more. Keeping them clear keeps the humidity away from your roof's edge.
If you are getting a new roof, you have choices. In a humid place like Charlotte, you shouldn't just pick the cheapest shingle. You need one designed for our climate.
Brands like GAF and CertainTeed make shingles with "StainGuard" or "StreakFighter" technology. They put copper into the granules. When it rains, tiny amounts of copper wash down the roof. This copper kills algae before it can even start.
Buying a cheap shingle in Charlotte is like buying a winter coat in Florida. It's the wrong tool for the job. We always recommend shingles with a lifetime warranty against algae. It keeps your home looking great and protects your investment.
You might think a little humidity isn't a big deal. But your roof is the most important part of your home. It protects your family. It protects your furniture. It protects your memories.
When humidity wins, your roof fails. A failing roof leads to:
